Check your exhaust system for leaks (of any kind) ! If all else is working properly, you've likely got a hole in the exhaust system. Backfiring is caused by fresh air that is 'literally' sucked into the exhaust system and thus provides oxygen for the ignition of unburnt fuel vapors that are exhausting from your cylinders (through the exhaust valves). In an air tight system, there is NO oxygen in the exhaust system, so the unburnt fuel vapors are usually absorbed by your cat converter or simply flushed out the tail pipe. Chris San Diego
