A couple of months back I was looking for a replacement for my pitted '71 Square windshield, they're available new for about $130 here in Denver, CO. Why go to all the trouble with new rubber, etc., if you're going to put in old glass? Also, before removing, make sure you have the windshield seal in hand, sometimes availability is spotty. You'll have to use a razor blade to cut the lip off the old seal to get the windsheld out(unless it's broken). There's been several articles in the VW mags in the past few years on replacing glass, if you or someone you know has back issues. Can't give you exact names and issues, they've vanished into boxes when I moved, haven't found them yet.
