I've found that letting the emergency blinkers flash briefly will startle
the idiot, but they will only work a time or two before the victim, er,
offender, realizes that they aren't brake lights.
I rarely ever get tailgated, mainly since I drive fast. However, should
someone actually keep up with me I generally let them pass. I don't
tailgate people myself as I'm afraid of the damage that could result (to
both car and wallet).

I always thought it'd be fun to attach a button to the dash that, when
pushed, would activate the brake lights. That way you're in no real danger
of being rear-ended, there's no dainty TAP which most tailgaters are pros
at dealing with........and wouldn't it be fun to watch em lurch?
