Ron,
yes it is possible to put the distributor 180 degrees wrong but I 
donĄt think the engine would still be running then. 
When the engine runs hot, one cause could be that the timing is 
very(!) early. Maybe you have the wrong distributor (there were 
many different ones used). It is hard to tell from a distance.
