Greg,
that little opening was connected to the underside of the air intake.
If you still run the original air cleaner there is a flap inside
the air duct. This is either loose and mooving when air is succed in,
or it can be locked so that only air from the underside and therefor from the heater is succed in. A lot of older cars have a means to switch the air intake to pre-heated air in the winter time. I believe it was to avoid carb icing.
