Hi folks,
several answers already given.
I have noticed that the A/T is very sensitive to oil fil level.
Also if one or more of the vacuum tubes are either leaking or blocked
it will result in driveability issues.
Re the conversion I fully agree with Adriaan. It is a lot more work 
to convert to manual (it can be done though) than it is to repair or
replace a tranny. I would believe that in the US (the land of 
Automatic transmissions) it is not too hard to find a replacement A/T .
