I had always thought this would be prohibitive due to the size of the
motor required, but the topic came up at work last week and someone
mentioned that it might be a natural application for a hybred
vehicle where there is already a BIG generator that is the only thing
driven by the IC engine.
This would bring a couple of side benefits: The motor could be
sealed inside the freon system just like a refrigerator compressor
thus eliminating the shaft seal which is responsible for much of the
Freon loss; the whole system could be plumbed in "hard" lines thus
eliminating the flexible lines which are now necessary to accomodate
engine vibration--and are responsible for the rest of the leakage.
In addition the motor/compressor could be located anywhere, so it
could be used to "balance" the car.
On the down side, it would no doubt add to the total weight and
detract from fuel eficiency.
