Hmm, not a bad idea, sounds sane to me... Can anyone shed some brighter light
on this subject? Specifically, the current draw required for a 12v motor and
suppliers of such compressors (and related A/C parts?). Any other "things you
should know"?

I have though about this a little. Install the AC in the front, in place
of the spare tire (you've got to feel lucky, right?). Perhaps
modification of one of those very small window-mount room A/C units,
rewired for 12vDC. A little research would show how large an electric
motor would be required, then how much the charging system would have to
be upgraded (there is no free lunch -- you'd still be pulling down
several horsepower when in use). Lets say you use a jumbo alternator...
