This is certainly a problem area, but I believe it has more to do
with rust-through at the front of the rear wheel wells. This lets
water into that area on both sides, but only on the right does the
water have a tight spot where it can stay for a long period. I don't
think the rubber will help, but oil/tar/rustproofing probably will,
and caulking up the rust through areas will do the most good.
