James, Last year I had thought about adding hydraulics to my baby as well but for different reasons. The reason I became interested was for varying road conditions and speeds. The Porsche 959 automatically lowers the body of the car as its speed increases, which allows the car to move even faster. The French Citroen (however you spell it) also has an adjustable air suspension, it's really quite neat! I decided that hydraulics would be a good, quick way to adjust my car to conditions: On bad roads the whole body would be raised to keep tire/fender damage from occurring and bottoming out. On the freeway and smoother roads the body would be lowered. The front and/or rear could be raised if it's under load, like when you use the car as a daily driver and you are helping someone move... I looked and called several companies I found advertised in the LowRider magazine and none of them had kits for VW nor knew anyone who could help (southern/central California would be the place to go, however). It's due to our suspension not having enough platform space (like American cars) to mount the units. I have seen a couple of Bugs with hydraulics but they were custom jobs. For those who turn their noses up at hydraulics, think of it as a simple tool instead of just a "look at me" device, expand its possibilities. Since I couldn't easily get hydraulics for my baby I opted for air adjustable ones on the rear. Ya do what ya can with what ya got :) Toby Erkson, air_cooled_nut@pobox.com '72 VW Squareback 1.6L bored and stroked to 2.0L '75 Porsche 914 1.8L Portland, Oregon, http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/8501/ ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: hydraulics on VW Author: type-3-errors@umich.edu at SMTPGATE Date: 11/19/97 12:23 AM I will admit that this is not a norm question on this list ( at least I don't think ) but when I do decide to fix up my Squareback I would like to have some information.... thanks James 68 Squareback "Rosie the wonder Lesbian"
