synth oil in high milers?

Question:

What is the going thinking on adding synthetic oil to a high mileage motor
for the first time?  Compression is within tolerable limits.  If I went
with a more viscous grade would this decrease the posibility of leakage
arounf the piston rings, etc.?  I want this motor to last significantly
longer than it already has, seems to run well, and I want to keep it that
way.  By the way, it isn't  a VW, much less a type 3.  It's my girlfriends
'79 Mustang V6 (yech).  Not all of us out there are priviledged enough to
own a type 3  :(  .  I just want the skinny from those in the know.  Thanks
