I am pretty sure it is steel, ( a magnet stuck to it pretty good) it is
fairly heavy, compared to another rack (which was definately aluminum) that
was of comparable size. I will try and take some pictures and get them
scanned. from what I know of this rack it is from the early 60's (
considering the only other one like it in construction that I have seen
pictures on was on a 56 type 2 -- the one on the type 2 had 5 adjustable
legs( wich just rest in gutters) on each side plus two fixed legs on each
side which clamped down)... it appears to be made by the same company that
made the common beetle steel rack....
