Just would like to add to Jim's good advice: Do what your mechanic/engine
builder suggests (for example, they may have already broken it in, thus
there's nothing for you to do). Also, the engine needs to be dead cold
when checking the valve clearances, like let it sit over night and in the
morning performing the check (just clarifying).
Since you have a brand new engine, AFTER it's broken in, use pure synthetic
oil, such as Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1. It's sooooooooo much better than
conventional!

After driving it home I would change the oil, let it cool down and
check the valve adjustments.
Repeat at 100 miles and again at 500.
During the first 500-1000 miles I would try to avoid sustained
driving at any constant rpm, but do occasionally and briefly explore
the rpm extremes.
