Some time ago I asked if anyone had come across one of the little
cylindrical metal boxes that are found in-line just in front of the
T3 FI fuel pumps--a dead one, that is. Well Keith Park found one
that had rusted through and agreed to send it to me for dissection.
It arrived today.
You may recall that it has a crimped seam around its "waist" so I
planned to just grind off the rolled over metal and let the parts
fall apart. The first thing I noticed about Keith's unit was that he
had sandblasted it, thus revealing that the inlet and outlet nipples
were brazed in place. This was a surprise, but not as much as when I
discovered that the two halves of the body were also brazed together.
I realized that as I tried to grind away the crimp and found that
even with the rolled over metal gone the two halves were still stuck
together firmly. So I stuck it in a lathe and turned down the seam
until it broke apart.
You know what's in there? Absolutely NOTHING! It was completely
empty, no baffle, no coarse filter mesh, nada. The only difference
between the inside and the outside was that there was very little
rust in the inside.
Next time I'm under there installing new hose, I will NOT be putting
this part back in place. It's a fair amount of work to get it in
place just right, it takes extra hose and hose clamps, and it is
something else which can leak.
So thanks for the part, Keith. I'm afraid it caught in the tooling
and got kind of bent up as it came open; would you like it back?
