Jason, Putting a 911 box into a fastback is a lot of work but will be well worth it if you are prepared to do the work Firstly you have to have an IRS late model Type-3. The best box to get is a 911/915 from after 1972 as the clutch release arm is the same as in the VW. The Porsche clutch release guide is also smaller than the VW one so the VW tube has to be cut off and welded over the top of the Porsche one. The late VW release bearing fit on the Porsche clutch release with little difficulty. The clutch cable guide has to be modified. The Porsche gear selector rod also has to be lengthened with a section of the VW one. Also the Porsche gear lever base plate has to be mounted to the VW tunnel which involves cutting and welding in a new mount. See Volksworld September 1997 for further details Don't know whether you have to switch the gears around , but the article in Volksworld says that you dont have to dismantle the transmission in any way so who knows?
