continue the mirror debate

Not that it is of any importance, I just checked my 1971 fastback on the
mirror situation.  It has a left side mirror only.  No provision
(threaded hole, plug ect.) for a right side mirror.  I find this
surprising.  I would have thought that VW would have only used one door
for right or left hand drive cars.  From the point of view of a company
bean counter,  it almost makes sense to only have one door available. 
Are there other differences in door shells for right and left hand drive
cars?
