I can't add anything to what the other guy said... but once when I locked
my keys in my car in Orlando I tried to break in by punching out a quarter
window since I had two spares at home (I also was only halfway through a
1500 mile trip so I didn't want to bust a full window pane). I couldn't do
it! I could have broken the glass I suppose, but I was trying to punch out
the whole window by prying the bottom of the quarter window frame off the 
door. I made it looser, but it really had little effect. The
the window always worked properly after that. Another example of VW
engineering. I actually got in by dismantling one of the rear pop out
windows.
