Please provide a few more details. Do you have fuel injection or carbs? 
What do you mean by "jitters"? Is it a vibration you feel in the body of 
the car, or is it some kind of power surging from the engine? It could be 
several things, so you need to be more specific.

When down shifting, it helps to rev the engine a little before engaging 
the clutch after you've shifted the transmission. This matches the engine 
speed to the clutch disc, reducing shocks and making your clutch last a 
little longer. Also check your clutch free play.

Does 2nd grind on upshifting? If so, then that synchro is worn out, 
otherwise, it's either a clutch free play problem or a driver skill 
problem. I guess it could be sloppy shifter, too.
