The contacts in your clock may be corroded or carbon covered.  Sand them clean and see 
if that helps first.  The fusable link in the clock is special low temperature solder.  
If you bypass that, you take a chance of running your battery down.  There must be a 
reason the fusable link failed, and that reason is excess heat in the circut - a circut 
which is only supposed to pass electricity momentarily.  If you bypass the fusable link, 
you should test to be certain that you clock is not drawing power all the time.
