I am posting this back to the whole group because I thought it might be of general interest. Hope you don't mind >From: cayson@juno.com (Cayson J Ellsworth) > >>There is a special bracket that clamps to the fan housing with a >>longer bolt. The strap that wraps around the coil is "part of the coil" >and >>is not the piece that I am talking about. I have OE refinished brackets >if >>that's what broke. If fastened correctly, the bracket will never break. > >Pardon my ignorance, but I don't know what you're referring to. I'm >clear on what you mean by the strap, that's what broke. I didn't have >any kind of bracket or anything though. The strap was just wedged under >the strap for the generator. So am I missing a piece then? How much for >these thingies? Thanks. Sounds like you are the victum of an engine rebuild by a mechanic with that old familiar "not-familiar-with-type-3-itis" who didn't know where that silly part belonged. ;-) The bracket clamps around the fan housing just to the left of the generator at a place where the fan housing is about 1" wide. There is a bolt at that point which holds the two fan housing halves together. [There may be a dowell pin there also, but that's not what I'm talking about.] Let me know whether there is a bolt there. There are several such bolts placed periodically around the fan housing. ONE of them should have been about 1/4" longer than the others, so that it could be used to go through this extra bracket. Make sure the bolt you need isn't broken off in the fan housing. The coil strap bolts to this bracket with TWO bolts.
