One of the first things to check would be your vacuum advance canister. Check to see if it is leaking (not holding vacuum) and make sure it works correctly. You can do this by buying or borrowing a hand-held vacuum pump and applying vacuum to the hose that connects to the canister (mounted on the side of the distributor). Make sure the plate inside the dist. moves when you do this and stays there until you release the vacuum. Also make sure the vacuum line to the dist. is not cracked or loose. Hope this helps.
