I've been told that Bosch went through a period in the late '80s or there
abouts when they had their starters built in South America -- and that they
have since switched back because of quality issues.  I don't know if this is
true but it would explain why I went through so many starters on my '71 Bus.
When I finally got a good one the solenoid problem went away for good.
