So, if some of know it already, just click on to the next mail (not too many anyway in the last days, everybody`s on events ?) The 1st of my current set was the square. It was used by the US Army in Munich, Germany. I got it for 650 Marks and it didn`t need a lot of work, right now I`m turning it into a resto-cal with loads of EMPI parts. So, it just happened that it was a `69. The next in my collection was the bug. It was up for sale in parts. Most of the thing it carried were already gone. The only thing left was the adjustable front beam with disk-brakes, that my friend wanted to buy. The remaining shell and floor, filled with junk under the roof, I took home for 100 Marks because although the car looked terrible it didn`t have hardly any rust. In the trash in the car, by the way, I found an emergency kit from 1955, complete and never used. Today the car is rstored and looks great with it`s dropped front with 195/50`s and the standard highth rear with 195/65`s. what`s it called in the US, Old School style? Once again, it just happened to be a `69. The last-one to be bought was the fastback. As my wife`s 1972 (r.i.p.) and 300+ kilometers beetle was slowly but steadily falling apart, and the above beetle was far from being completed, we were looking for another cheap car. In the papers I found a "VW 1600 TL Variant" (What the hell was this supposed to mean ? TL or Variant or what ?) So we went there. My wife didn`t like it because she hs had enough of rusty cars. Someone had started to "repair" the front fenders, nothing left to put the headlights back on. So we went back home without the car. The fastback with short front end didn`t let me sleep the following days. I decided to give my winter-Passat to my wife and take the fastback. With a few metal stripes and rivetts (hope it`s the right word, little things that you also have on jeans) I put the headlights back on. No water protection from the rear, but it worked. Two weeks later I blew the engine. No idea how this worked out at a constant speed of 50 mph. When I opened the engine-case, I found the third cylinder totaly gone. It had melted to the cylinder head. I put in the engine of the squareback, that I had put away for the winter and drove drove it till spring last year. Now it`s waiting for a rustoration. Once more it just happened to be... 69 is also my favourite number, if you know what I mean... Now, this story was longer than I expected and told more than I did on previous mails. Bad for those who just clicked away. Roland `69 square `69 fast `69 beetle
