I have had offer of any where from 650.00 to 700.00 with all german parts in
L.A and I have had other offer like 800 to 1000 and up with all german parts.

On a rebuild, the sky is the limit. It entirely depends upon what you're
after. My first rebuild on my fastback was a mild 1776cc motor. 30,000
miles later the heads were fried. Make sure you get quality components,
and that your CR doesn't head too far above 7:1. Gas today is just too
bad for anything higher. As for the cost of my 1776 rebuild, it was
$1000, with a rebuilt case. Since then, I bought a a motor with all Berg
parts, 78 mm stroker crank, 88mm pistons and the whole nine yards. It
came to $4500, parts alone, no labor. If on a budget, stay as close too
stock as possible, using heads no larger than 88mm on a type 3. Anything
bigger, and your heat will be too high for the motor to last an
appreciable amount of time. I frimly believe the 1776cc would have
lasted with a lower CR and better heads. Good luck
