Much depends upon the market. The market being the area the car is being sold in (just the small town or other, possibly bigger towns near by) and the demand for such a vehicle. The only thing I know about Illinois is that you must have bumpers on your vehicle, even if you are just passing through on your journey home from three years in the Navy and the holes for the bumpers are totally sealed up and your plates are from Oregon (get the feeling a trooper pulled me over? ;) Since the vehicle is worth more than Blue Book I would recommend you have the vehicle appraised, preferably by someone who specializes in cars and who has appraised custom vehicles before. Be sure to have all your receipts. You may need to explain that the market for older VWs is nothing to scoff at and the industry is big since most appraisers deal with American (uhg!) metal -- major magazines, after-market industry and shows. Point out special things that you've done that make the car worth more (all new rubber, custom paint, new engine, new clutch, new interior, etc.). Advertise on the internet -- I've advertised my Porsche on at least six free auto listings, with one that has a *good photo* so people have an idea what she looks like (see http://www.dgi.net/914/wantads/wantads0497.html for example). I have received serious replies from all across the United States.
