Why not fly, hitch or take Greyhound (a veeerrrrry interesting
experience, believe me!) out there and drive it home? As someone who has
trecked cross-country in VW's for most of her life, I can tell you there
is no better way to travel. There is something about put-putting through
the Grand Canyon in a little four-banger, with waffle-weave imprints
permanently etching themselves into the backs of your legs, that is so
perfect...so "right". Once you travel by VW you'll never go any other
way! It's cheap, too ... just gas and a little food, if you sleep in
your car in truck stop parking lots. The one recommendation I would make
is to plot out your route and find the names (through this list or
others) of any reputable mechanics in towns along the way, in case an
emergency pops up that you can't fix roadside. It's really the only way
to see the country. :) -Trish
