fuel pump

Hi all,
Something strange has happened to me. Two days ago I took apart the fuel 
pump, just for cleaning and inspection. Today I was going to put it back 
together. According to the Vw manual and haynes and other books there's 
supposed to be a spring that loads the cut off diaphragm. This makes 
sense, but I can't remember whether there was a spring there when I took 
it apart. I always line up parts when I take things apart, but it just 
wasn't there. I looked everywhere on the floor, between the tools, in 
all the things I use for cleaning, but...nothing. I'm becoming more and 
more convinced that there wasn't a spring in the first place.
Am I loosing it, have I lost it, or are there fuel pumps without the 
spring ????? Help!!
