Front-end rubber

Volks,

I had my '64 Notch's front-end chassis opened and welded yesterday.
It was pretty bad, one of the bottom chassis end was dangling, waiting to 
snap.

The rubber was severly meshed, the previous owner had it stuffed with 
wraps of
inner tube tire. I've called several local store, they don't seem to have 
'em.
I look for it in the WCM catalogue, no luck. My mechanic suggests to cut 
of car or bike tire
and it should work fine.
any suggestion?
