Re: Hello out there in Type-3 land

David,
I fail to see why you would have to sell your car since owning a VW is pretty
minimal on the pocket book (well, the stock versions are :) as compared to
other cars. Also, the Squareback is ideal for college as you can pack all your
stuff into it since it has a 50.3 cubic foot cargo capacity (I did, with the rag
top you can pack even more crap into it) -- do you know how many cases of beer
that is from the Coors distributor?!? A lot! It can hold several friends and
everyone's camping/rock climbing/bungee jumping/biking/kayaking/rafting gear and
is utterly fantastic in the snow even if you *don't* have chains (I did rather
frequently). Besides, your car will be the easiest to spot in the parking lot
(mine was, provided you could *find* a damn parking spot, grrrrr).

If you are going for a rebuild then stay stock while you're in college (good
move!) since bigger engines require more time and money (I did and paid),
however, I personally and highly recommend that you have a full flow oil
filtration system installed (I did) while the engine is being built. Your
engine will last much longer than normal, period! Also, with Cali's overzealous
smog laws you'll be better off with a stock engine for the time being. And if
the rebuild is a good one you could even use synthetic oil... ;)

I was wondering if any body in this club is located in southern
California and how it works out to drive with the heat and freeways.
I was also wondering how I should rebuild my engine if I was going to
move down there. If anyone could help me out then that would be
great. See I am going off to college next year down to the L.A. area
and my mom keeps telling me that I will have to sell my car and I
really don't want to. If anyone can give me a few tips than thanks
