That would be the combination of thin gaskets with spacer washers;
they will leak.
Thick gaskets have a smaller (8mm) center hole and
will restrict oil flow somewhat. They are also somewhat smaller
(14mm vs 16mm) in OD so they do not center up properly on the case
and cooler counterbores. This can lead to problems if the seal slips
off center and blocks the oil flow even more.
There is also a third seal, an adaptor seal which is the large ID/OD
on one end and the small ID/od on the other. It is thin and must be
used without spacer washers. It is used to fit an early oil cooler
to a late case or vice versa.
The root of the problem is that most of the commonly sold gasket
sets do not come with the late style gaskets. This is especially
surprising since late beetles actually use these same gaskets and
they use 4 (!) of them with the offset oil cooler adaptor (71-.)
These gaskets must be purchased separately.
