Aww, not again!...
I use pure synthetic only! Either Mobil 1 15w-50 or Castrol Syntec 20w-50
(I prefer Castrol). Both out perform conventional oil hands down. Period.
Synthetics lubricate sooo well that you are NOT to use them in a new
engine until it has finished its proper break-in period using conventional
oil (unless specified otherwise by the original engine builder!).
Synthetics are much better (nowadays Keith, ;) in transferring heat. A
conventional multigrade oil in my baby got hot faster and stayed hot longer
than either of the synthetics I currently use. A conventional oil in my
engine would be like serving hot coffee to a person suffering from heat
stroke.
If you've been using conventional oil for some time it's not recommended
that you switch to a synthetic as it will REALLY clean up the engine and
cause possible oil blockages/restrictions. You would need to change the
oil and strainer several times before it would be reasonably safe (best to
rebuild the engine, break it in, then switch to synthetic). Unless, of
course, you just installed a full flow oil filtration system or you are one
of those lucky owners who has a Type 4, then you just need to change the
filter once or twice.
A leaky case may become more leakier (hey, that's a word in VW-speak!)
since synthetic oil flows better than conventional oil. So when you get
that rebuild make sure they put the case together real well (maybe O-ring
it?).
My three cents worth,
