Last night I got my first close look at Shasta, our '69 FI Fastback, as I prepared to drop the engine. Now, strange to say, I know nothing of the history of this vehicle, i.e., why it doesn't run. It had been sitting for a year (2 years? 3 years?) in a non-running condition, and the seller couldn't remember what had gone wrong with it (the car had been grampa's). Ennyway, when I pulled the dipstick, I noticed the oil came half way up the stick. Then I removed the drain plug and --strangely weird-- about a quart or two of clear fluid (looked like water, but gotta be gasoline, right?) came out before any oil came out. Well, just then my wife yelled out to the garage that the lasagna was ready...so much for working on engines for the evening! This weekend I will drop the engine. But, since this is the first time I have ever experienced this situation of gasoline(?) in the case, I wonder if some of you can tell me what I am likely to find when I get the engine out and apart? Shasta is still a wonderful find. I realized how well these cars were assembled when I gently closed the doors and hear a faint ca-chunck...and the doors fit perfectly after 28 years of service!!!! I doubt that there will be a rattle or loose nut (except perhaps for me) in the entire vehicle. Well, 'nuff said for now. Anyone willing to tell me what I am likely to find this weekend with the engine sitting in my lap? Thanx....
