David Walters '73 > 1600 Notch S. Florida, USA The original post mentioned using a phillips screwdriver to get at this "box and umbilical." The computer analysis connector requires no tools to get at so I think Keith is correct. Perhaps the original poster can confirm whether this box was above or below the engine hatch cover. The FI brain is above. VW started the computer analysis connector in the 1971 models, it actually has no connections to the FI and gives you very little info that is not available elsewhere. I have a little box that I once built that plugs into this. From here I can: turn on the ignition start the car turn on the left and right turn signals turn on the parking lights check the AT kickdown solenoid check the fluid level in the battery (if only I still had one of those special batteries that were last made in about 1978) attach my dwell meter The VW "computer" could also measure charging voltage and cranking current and it would drive the timing light, but all in all it was not very useful. I do like being able to adjust the dwell alone because I can run the starter from there, but because of changes that VW made, this feature only works on the 71-2 cars.
