For all who have brake problems and cannot pinpoint the exact cause: your brake problem will most certainly have something to do with the age of the components. One of the items of the brake system which could do with regular maintenance (let's say: every 26 years) is the brake pedal. It was not until my brakes were binding because of my pedal being almost stuck to its shaft, that I found out this fact of Beetle life. Follow the instructions in your manual to take out the pedal cluster. Disassemble, clean everything (you will be surprised by the amount of gunk on/under the pedal cluster), and re-assemble with proper amounts of grease. Refit the cluster, adjust the stop plate, master cilinder pushrod and clutch pedal free play. If you want to do this thing right the first time, repaint the pedals and the pedal area and renew the clutch cable while you're at it. Only then you will be sure the repair will last another 26 years. You will be surprised by the lightness of your pedals once they are back in the car. Now you know your brakes are at least not binding because of an unwilling pedal. Good luck, Hanno Spoelstra <H.L.Spoelstra@WbMt.TUDelft.NL> Bloemendaal, The Netherlands
