It seems to cranking ok now. Please read on: Well, I took my 6V battery to be tested today - turns out it was only putting out 4V under a load. Picked up a new battery - now it cranks a lot better but I still have to floor the gas and crank for a least 30 seconds to start it. It seems like it's flooding somehow and I have to floor to pedal to clear the flooding? After some other comments that implied this might be an electrical problem, I checked everything - plugs, points, distributor, timing, coil, battery wires, 009 distributor, etc. - they all look new. The car will just not start easily! From reading my books, it indicated that the electric chokes or the float valves might be at fault? I checked the float valves - not sticking - in fact, the carb look really clean inside. I then took off the 6V chokes - one looks brand new and one looks a little older - they both seem to be working - they are closed when I come out in the morning but they open after a couple minutes. They then seem to stay open until the next morning - this seems ok to me since it's been 70-90 degrees F here for the last few days. Once the car is started, it again runs perfectly. If the car is cold, I have to rev it a little to warm it up/keep it idling - could this be an indication of bad/sticking electric chokes? I'm getting worried now - I've never had a VW problem that I couldn't solve within a couple hours (except when I put a rod through the case...)
