My notch is still 6 volt and living in Montana I've had the situation come up a few times. I've learned a hard lesson. You can use a 12 volt system as long as you don't start the other vehicle. I had mine jumped 3 times with the other car started and every time I had electrical problems after. Things like the points burned so bad that the car hardly runs etc. When I finally realized what was happening (ok I'm a little slow, it took three times) I asked a mechanic. He told me to go ahead jump it when necessary but not to start the other car. Since then I haven't had any problems.
