>From: Toby Erkson <Toby_Erkson@ccm2.hf.intel.com> >First off, welcome back Jim A! Thanks, but It looks like I'm going to be out of here again next month. I spent a night in Portland last Wed. I should have gotten some specifics from you so I could have called. >Second, how does one determine the soundness of an autotranny? What does one >look for in the visual inspection and what should be expected in the test drive? This is a hard question. Of course if you can drive it it helps a lot. If you are just buying a chunk of metal on the ground then there are a couple of things to look at: The vacuum modulator is on the bottom and if the tranny is on the ground then it is likely that it is bent. It is important that you know which year the tranny is from if you need to replace the VM. Early is 68-71, late is 72-3, carbed versions used a third. The governor is under the can above the left output shaft. This is sealed by an O-ring which always leaks by now. Leaks in that area are easy to identify as soon as you realize there is a seal there. This leak is often mistaken for a leaky left output shaft seal. This is very easy to replace, but clean everything off around that area before you slip the bail and pull the cover. Last time I checked, VW still had the O-rings; there are cheaper sources for the VMs. Jim --------------------------------------------------------------------- Melissa Kepner Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org jadney@vwtype3.org Laura Kepner-Adney Madison, Wisconsin ---------------------------------------------------------------------
