Auto Tranny Drive Plates

I have had some trouble with Type III drive plates over the last year.  I have had several break on me.  I have yet to determine if 
the plates are just plain fatigue cracking from age or from a misbalanced torque converter.  The torque converter shop I have 
found can't spin test them for balance because of the "wierd drive mechanism" (they said not me) but they do balance them 
static.  I found extras at junk yards for 10-15 bucks each.  But beware as I suspect that they are getting old.
