This doesn't ring a bell, but I wonder if your exhaust is really as tight as
you think. One possibility that is rather off-the-wall is that there is a
large puff of crankcase gas vented through the breather when you let up on
the throttle. If there were very little gas going into the intake, I
suppose some of this could blow out the aircleaner intake and get mixed with
the intake cooling/heater air and get piped inside.
This is a long shot. I've never seen such a thing, but if you can get your
car to do this repeatably you could test the theory by removing the breather
hose from the air cleaner and seeing if the effect went away.
