I had a devil of a time keeping it running by grounding the >wire, I don't know why. Good, you found the connector in the engine compartment. You now need to find a way to reliably ground that wire. The fuel pump should run continuously if that wire is grounded, so if it does not, the problem is on the relay side of that connector. If it does the problem is on the brain side. Bad connections in the harness can cause many problems. It is not that the brain is doing something intentional because it senses a fault, it is rather that fact that it is confused or disabled and therefore not performing properly. Don't take a chance with this. Keith is right, this is a time to do a careful, longlasting job.
