Re: MORE Distributor problem?

Geez guys distributor problems????
Why don't you pull the distributor out, remove the 13mm nut and washer,
loosen the 10mm nut and the whole shebang will slide out with a bit of
persuasion as it will hit the rod controlling the air-flaps in the
housing but it will come out! Next completely dissasemble the unit with
a pen and paper nearby to make notes. throw the condensor and points in
the bin as they cost zip to buy. After it is completely dissasembled,
clean with solvent etc and make sure all the spinning bits move nicely
and lubricate with Bosch grease (Berg has it if you need a tube) and
sometimes I use auto trans fluid as well. make sure it all spins free.
make sure the vacuum unit is okay by sucking on it- if not, throw it as
far as you can and give me a holler and I will find a 2nd hand one. (new
ones are very hard to get now. replace the condensor with the correct
one which in your case will be a long wire job as your coil is like
mine, or should be, on the right side of the engine, thus any other
condensor will have a short wire. Don't muck around, just buy the right
part. Same with points, put in new ones or real good ones and set the
gap as per what you like. grease the spring(s). I can't see there being
a need but you could then like I did on my 'S' during the 6 month engine
build, take your distributor to a shop with a machine that spins them
and get them to check it out. Don't worry too much about the specs, so
long as the advance works and is all in by 2000 rpm or so. I don't
normally check them, just put the whole unit back in the car and run the
engine, you will know if it works. The ZV/JCU4R3 which I think you have
is also mechanical advance but that shouldn't affect anything. Also do
dig up a set of 90' dizzy cap lead ends. I couldn't get new ones for my
'S' so used some nearly new ones and they work okay. So long as they are
90' (otherwise it makes a mess of your aluminium paper stuff lining the
engine lid and as mine is new I don't want to replace it yet. Tell me
how it is going. While the distributor is out, consider pulling the
distributor drive out and correcting it's position if it is not correct.
Not a hard job. Also note the drive on the bottom of the distributor
with regards to TDC as otherwise it will point 180' out and as we know a
vacuum distributor in a T3 has limited movement due to the vacuum itself
so don't make it too hard for yourself. Persevere and don't use a 009
unless you have too. Original is best.

Aaron.
