Try a compression test. This is something you can do yourself if you can
obtain a tester. To have a mechanic do it wouldn't be expensive, plus
she/he could offer better advice based upon the readings.

On my $150 '71 Squareback special, i've been trying to isolate an engine
noise, haven't used a stethoscope, timed it or adjusted valves yet:
right side, tick-tick-tickidy-tick(not always though) lack of power, LOTS of
blowby from filler...Heres the twist, it idles without a miss!
Now nobody waste your whole day on this one but, i'm thinking burnt
piston/rings,etc.
Any Ideas?
