The Type 3 exhaust system starting in 1966 is actually 3 parts. There are 2
small heat exchangers coming off of cylinders 2 & 4 that are connected to
the main part of the muffler with a 46mm nut. The elbow between the fan
housing and that heat exchanger also changed in '66 with a small hose to the
collector on the car body being added. Later on the muffler changed again
slightly when the exhaust pipe got larger. This muffler is still available
from Bill and Steve's and will work on all '66 and later cars as far as I
know as long as you get the tailpipe to go with it. The heat exchangers
should be saved from your old muffler as they are no longer available. If
you have an earlier car you will probably have to make do with some sort of
alternative. I did an article last year for the Karmann Ghia Club of North
America that I should probably forward to Greg for the web page as it
details some of the changes over the years and shows some examples of
different aftermarket mufflers that have been produced.
