gurgling

hey all,
  i have yet another question.  my '73 squareback that i just recently
rebuilt the engine in (less than 1000 miles).  is having a problem, i think:)
 at idle i can here a noise that eminates up the oil fill tube.  it sounds
like the oil pickup is gurgling.  i think this means that it needs oil, but
the dipstick says it is full.  i do have an external oil filter, but i filled
it before installation, so the oil is there.  has anybody had a similar
problem or even an idea what is wrong?
  by the way, thanks to all the poeple on the list who have helped me with
various problems before.  i really apreciate it and i think that it is part
of the reason we still drive VWs:)
