Starting in 71, the arms attach to the shaft via a tapered spline.  
Originally, only the shaft has spline-like knurling on it, but once 
tightened in place these make an impression in the softer metal of the arm.  
This makes the adjustment "notchy", but it is possible to force the 
adjustment into the "middle" of a notch.  The Bentley manual has details on 
the positioning of the parking area for different years.
