It works by forcing air through a wet filter of sorts, usually an extruded honycomb paper or a bunch of long slivers of aspen. They work well in dry climates below 120 degrees. A swamp cooler has the added advantage of humidifying the dry desert air in your home. In the past there were ones made that looked like a jet engine sticking out of a cars window. as you drove air forced in and cooled the car.Tom
