In some When my gas heater died a couple years ago it started burning *very* loud and blowing a bunch of smoke so I simply switched it off. No flames, no explosion, no big deal. You do have to treat them well and use your noggin though. ie - don't switch them off while they're burning, run them for a few minutes a month in the non-use sumer/spring months, inspect them occasionally and as an extra measure of caution I installed a carbon monoxide detector...
