timing

I have just adjusted the timing of my engine yesterday by rotating the
distributer.
The advancement was then around 2 degrees or so.  Is this a good amount of
advancement for my 72 Fuel injected Fastback or is there a better way to
adjust the timing?
I am a newbie to the world of Volkswagens (and for cars for that matter) so
don't laugh at me.
