This is just BS, born of complete ignorance and likely more than a 
little bit of water cooled chauvanism.  I have done many 8-10 hour 
drives, but I drove from the west side of the badlands to Chicago in 
the summer of '68.  That took 12-13 hours and covered 1150 miles 
stopping only for gas and toilets.  I ate while driving.
