Hey everyone I guess you can tell I'm a bit frustrated at present...hopefully someone can give me some ideas...here's the deal... I've got a 72 Fastback, 1641 (w/approx 10k on it), 2bbl single weber, .009 dist...has been a perfect daily driver for God knows how long. it's always run perfectly...until...back about Sept I took it off the road for about a month to drive the 66 I had...it sat (the 72) the whole time except for about once or twice a week I started it up and let it run for 20 min or so...never drove it for that time, just let it run...it always started up great...idled fine. In mid Oct I sold the 66 and put the 72 back on the road and it hasn't run as well since...there's a miss that no matter what I do, I can't get rid of...this is all I've done... Put it back on the road and that weekend took it on a long (about 180 miles) trip to a show...didn't run bad on the way there, just not the power it used to have and a slight miss on occasion...figured, hey, it sat for a month...it's to be expected. At the show I bought an Ignitor ignition and a Flame Thrower coil (they're supposed to match) and put them in at the show...dialed everything in...on the way home...even less power and blowing thin smoke...figured I didn't have the ignitor dialed in right...got home...played and played and finally got it right...Adj. the valves...but still an occasional miss and still thing smoke on hard acceleration. It's been doing the same thing to various degrees ever since...it also blows what I believe to be oil (but real thin...kinda smells like gas) in little black splatters out the tail pipe when you rev it after sitting at idle for a few seconds. The past couple weeks have been the worst though...about two weeks ago, I noticed the rear of my car, on the corner where the tail pipe is, was all black...it had run terrible that morning to work (I was worried about making it there)...that weekend, I pulled it in the garage, did a compression check...between 140 and 144 on all four...plugs were fouled so I put some new ones in...then it wouldn't start at all. After about 3 hours of looking over everything, (I couldn't see how a tune-up would cause it not to run) I took the ignitor out of it and put the points back in and it fired right up. Dialed it all back in, and it ran a lot better, but not right. The more I drove it, the worse it got. Always running rich no matter what I do...this weekend I pulled the plugs out and they were fouled, so I put some new back in, new fuel filters and a new air cleaner (paper) and that made a big difference, but still the occasional miss...and only after it gets warm...first 10 min it runs great. Today I put some new plug wires on it because to me it felt like a wire arcing...again, it's running a lot better, the best so far, but still there's a slight miss...load doesn't matter...Tomorrow I'm going to take this wonderful coil off and put my old blue coil back on...but after that, I'm lost...and I have a feeling it's not going to fix it. Any ideas?? Everything is dialed in...timing, points, valves...ignition system is new...the dist. is only 4 months old...I'm lost and I'm getting really frustrated...the black 'oil' coming out the tail pipe worries me. Any ideas are appreciated. thanks mikey P.S. What I really think the problem is is that it's pissed at me for taking it off the road and making it miss a show while driving the 'other' car for a month...VWs are like that ya know ;)
